Powerlyte Ads

You will see a lot of the graphic design work here as part of what I did for Powerlyte as I worked there managing all of the digital assets from product images, to web design, packaging and more. These images are part of some advertising done on the current product offerings at the time. The first one, is a 5×7 card designed to be printed on a full sheet and then cut, to product 4 separate product cards per sheet. The backs of the cards simply displayed the logo. The second one takes a similar design approach, crossing over some visual elements to create a full page magazine ad.

I started off in this design, with the magazine ad layout. The owner gave me an idea of what he wanted to include as well as the layout structure. It was to have a “busy gradient/light background” with the products shown both large, with options, and have the ribbon type overlays with more details. He showed me an ad for Surfboards that had something similar for the layout so I took that image and got to work.

I should point out, that all of the product images here, I took using a lightbox and then I cleaned them up in photoshop. So I already had the product images available for the add from my previous work. When coming up with a new design for the 07 website, we had determined which visual elements we wanted to carry over through out various designs. One of which, was the cursive corners.
To create those, I simply created the word “Powerlyte” and layerd it over and over until I found the shape and design I wanted. I changed the font size when needed.

Also in the background, I created a blended layer of the “Crest” logo. This is another element I had created which I discuss in detail in another entry. . Playing with layers and blends, I created the gradient background which white streaks to give it some sense of movement.
I played with a few variations of the rectangular type overlay and came up with this one because it was somewhat symmetrical in design and was simple enough not to distract from the products.
Lastly it was a matter of laying out the products and including the bullet points for each that the owner wanted to include. When reviewing revisions, we decided as well to use the honeycomb style to place a few detail pictures of the products. Some I fit into one shape and some I carried over across a few shapes. I think the result was rather effective.

For the 5×7 Cards, I took the magazine design elements and re sized then to fit the card layout. As the cards were specific to one product line, I decided to focus on that product line with background text replacing some of the magazine layout elements. This fit better with the smaller sized image. The challenge here was mainly in including all of the options such as all the colors of the feed necks and bodies without looking too cluttered.

I am pleased with both results as it shows a strong reuse of elements which were important in the branding of the 2007 line.
